We have continued our investigation of food and cooking, this week reading the story Stone soup by Marcia Brown, which is about three soldiers who come across a town looking for food and shelter. The towns people are hesitant to sharing the items they have. But with the magical recipe of stone soup, the soldiers tell them they can make a soup to feed the whole town.
I asked the class "surely you've had stone soup before?!" and was met with a class full of "no!!"
We made a list of ingredients in the book, as well as made suggestions of where we might find the materials and ingredients we needed to make the soup. We knew we couldn't find stones at the grocery store, and so on Tuesday we set out to find some stones that would be perfect for our soup! We found three stones that fit the description!

I asked the class what vegetables we they would like to have if they made their own stone soup. Our ingredient list included: carrots, celery, green beans, tomatoes and potatoes.
We also read Stone Soup by Jon J Muth. This story follows some of the same plot as the story by Marcia Brown with different characters and setting. We spent time comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences in the two stories.

We washed our stones thoroughly and then took a vote of which stone we should use in our soup. The largest stone won the vote!

On Friday we chopped our veggies to add to our soup, we combined our own veggies with barley and let our soup cook until it was perfect! Children who chose, tried soup with their lunch!

Our student teacher, Halie, also had her last day with us on Thursday! We sent Halie off to her new student teaching expereince with lots of hugs!

And as always we've had lots of time for play both indoors and out!

Questions you can ask your child this weekend

"What kind of stones do you need to make stone soup?"

"did you try the stone soup?"

"what vegetables were in the soup?"

"which stone did you vote for? Why was it your favorite?
