Self Portraits

In the weeks following our shapes study we dove into a mini study about our own identities. Looking at the things that made us individuals, what similarities we had with each other, and what was special about each of us. We spent time discussing our traits and finalized in a process piece of our own self portraits. Children spent time over a few weeks creating each of their own pieces, looking at themselves in the mirror, drawing from the shapes they recently learned onto paper to make the collage of their own portrait. Each child added skin tones with crayon, and if they chose to, watercolor to finish their pieces.
This project is always fun to do during this time of the year, when many children have spent the school year progressing their fine motor skills of holding their art utensils, and developing their art from scribbles to representation. Even children who are still enjoying the process of art, rather than the product, spoke about the shapes and lines they were making like their fingers, or their hair!
I know many families were able to see their childs art hung on our walls during conference day, I wanted to share with families who haven't been able to see them yet! Please enjoy our gallery of our self portraits in the Oak Classroom! (images can be clicked on to enlarge)
