Following an emergent curriculum, there are busy weeks, and slower weeks. The last few weeks have been busy busy weeks!!
Last week it felt like we were all about celebrating, the week was filled with pajama days, groundhogs day, and our kickoff of our celebration of black history month.
We spent time last week making and playing with cloud dough, “catching our shadow” and finding out what groundhogs day was all about!

This week our post office has been up and running! We’ve spent time this week learning about mail carriers, and our mailing system.
This topic has been a fun little segue into a few of our other topics in the classroom.

For the month of February we will be studying Oge Mora in celebration of black history month. Last week we re-read the book thank you Omu with its beautiful writing and illustrations by Mora. In the story, which focuses on community, sharing and gratitude, Omu is surprised by the gratitude her community gives her after she shares her delicious dinner with the members of her community. In the end a little boy thanks Omu with a personal thank you card.
I posed the question “ if you could write a letter to someone you know, who would you write your letter to?”
The children were eager to share who they would send a letter to, and this week while we learned all about the post office, we worked in making letters to the send to our family/friends.
Some children chose people in their immediate families, keep an eye out for letter in the mail! While others chose extended family!
After each child finished their “letter(s)” we worked together on addressing the envelope, putting a stamp on the envelope and sealing, before getting them out into our mailbox!

We got out on the ice this week! I’m hoping the weather can get back into some cooler nights and we’ll be able to have another ice session next week (weren’t we supposed to be getting 6 more weeks of winter?!)

And in between all of this, we also got into the valentines festivities with some fun play and art!

Things to ask your child:
  • Who did you chose to write your letter to?

  • (While driving) Ask children to keep an eye out for the blue drop boxes in your own neighborhood!

  • Can you show me any of your yoga moves (from winter Friday)
